My Story
Nancy Brayton-John
Nancy Brayton-John grew up in Escalon, CA, a small farming town in the central valley. She returned there after attending college at Humboldt State University and married her high school sweetheart. She taught elementary school for 38 years and raised her three children on the farm where she still lives with her husband.
She enjoyed using literature in the classroom to provide students with new perspectives on familiar situations. Her students loved hearing her tell stories about a three-legged cat named Dewey that she grew up with as a child. They connected with the mischievous gray cat that never let his “three-legged life” get him down.
Upon retiring from teaching, her dream was to share her stories about Dewey with children, encouraging them to celebrate their differences and inspire them to participate fully in life, regardless of their circumstances. She hopes Dewey’s adventures entertain them and that they grow to love him for his indomitable spirit.
